I don’t know a lot about music. But I do spend an obscenely large amount of time trolling the web for songs to fall in love with. I also contribute to Tuneage.

You can email me at erica [dot] mayyasi [@] gmail [dot] com or listen to my muxtape. If I’ve posted your music and you’d rather I didn’t, please email me and I will take it down right away. Plus hearing from you will probably be the highlight of my week.

Erica likes music

kattt:

New video from the Guillemots via Stereogum. It’s kind of (incredibly) low budget looking, almost entirely black, white and red, and falls prey to many a music video cliches but it’s still vaguely fun to watch and one of my favorite songs. I always listen to it while I put on my make-up pre-bar. I’m sorry, let me clarify: I used to always listen to it while I put on my make-up pre-bar. Now I just watch the Olympics.

David Choe’s gorgeous Obama poster is on sale at Upper...

David Choe’s gorgeous Obama poster is on sale at Upper Playground. You may ask, does this have anything to do with music? Um YES (kind of not really): David does artwork for Good Vibe recording artists. Er, I just like the poster. (via OMG Posters!)

The mix must go on... current favorites (vol. 4)

Just like the rest of the internet, I am devastated to be muxtape-less. I’d been updating mine with my current favorites (and occasionally themed mixes) and then sharing them here and I’d compiled a great list of 12 new favorites I was excited to share. This certainly isn’t as awesome as muxtape, but I’ve uploaded the 12 songs to this box widget so you *should* be able to stream them in a similar fashion (you can’t see it on your dashboard though… sorry!). I’ve never used the box widget before so please let me know if you have any problems with it.

RIAA spokesperson regarding Muxtape:

For the past several months, we have communicated our legal concerns with the site and repeatedly tried to work with them to have illegal content taken down. Muxtape was hosting copies of copyrighted sound recordings without authorization from the copyright owners. Making these recordings available for streaming playback also requires authorization from the copyright owners. Muxtape has not obtained authorization from our member companies to host or stream copies of their sound recordings.

It’s about nine hours each way and I’m in charge of the music.

I’m thinking more in terms of artists than songs. I think that having a playlist of songs by 10987419864 different artists is just going to highlight how long we have been in the car and if we can listen to a few (and by a few I mean more like 10) albums by artists whose music doesn’t get old after one song it might seem to go faster.

Anyone have any suggestions? So far I’m thinking The Fairline Parkway… one down, nine to go!

The Magic Numbers - “Love Me Like You”

Playing on my brother’s desktop, which either used to be my computer or has all my old music from my old computer on it (not sure), and just found all the music I downloaded from 1998 (or whenever Napster came about) through 2006. This is pretty insane. Quite a trip down memory lane. This was recently played in itunes by him, so that’s why I picked it and also, I like it. Enjoy.

Really glad to find out all my old, old music is being stored somewhere…

The French have taken a bad rap in this country in the past several years but are actually cool in movies and music (and wine and cheese). I’m recommending an awesome song which is a French cover of Jimi Hendrix’ Hey Joe. This version is by Alain Bashung.
It’s taken me months of listening to this on XMU daily to really get into how soulful his voice is and just all around how sexy the song can be.

I actually held off on buying it until today because it’s been nice to have it as a random surprise in the middle of XMU’s typical indie rock.

Assess accordingly:

Obama
1. “Ready or Not” Fugees
2. “What’s Going On” Marvin Gaye
3. “I’m On Fire” Bruce Spingsteen
4. “Gimme Shelter” Rolling Stones
5. “Sinnerman” Nina Simone
6. “Touch the Sky” Kanye West
7. “You’d Be So Easy” to Love Frank Sinatra
8. “Think” Aretha Franklin
9. “City of Blinding Lights” U2
10. “Yes We Can” will.i.am

McCain
1. “Dancing Queen” ABBA
2. “Blue Bayou” Roy Orbison
3. “Take a Chance On Me” ABBA
4. “If We MakeIt Through December” Merle Haggard
5. “As Time Goes By” Dooley Wilson
6. “Good Vibrations” The Beach Boys
7. “What A Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong
8. “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” Frank Sinatra
9. “Sweet Caroline” Neil Diamond
10. “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” The Platters

My take? Frank Sinatra gets points for spanning parties and universal adoration. Obama gets points for Nina Simone. McCain loses a zillion points for the selection of not one but two ABBA songs. McCain and Obama both get points for probably having little to nothing to do with the actual creation of these lists. Then again, maybe not. What campaign staffer would choose two ABBA songs for strategic reasons?
